Get Out Lehigh Valley: When Coal Was King

After parking on Rockport Rd, we'll walk to the 26-mile long Lehigh Gorge Trail, passing a tunnel excavated by 19th century workmen. We'll walk north along the wide cinder trail to Buttermilk Falls and beyond. Up until the early 201th century, boats loaded with coal came down this section of the Lehigh.

This hike is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs on a leash are welcome. No bathrooms are available. Length: 3 miles  Duration: 2+ hours   GPS: 40.965798, -75.757101

Location: Lehigh Gorge State Park, Rockport acces, Rockport Road, Weatherly, PA 

Directions: Take I-476 north and take Exit 95 to I-80 West. Travel west on I-80 to Exit 273 and Route 940. Take Rt. 940/Church Street south for 0.8 miles. Turn left off Rt. 940 onto N. Lehigh Gorge Drive. Continue 3.8 miles and cross Buck Mt. Road and Leslie Run Rd, as N. Lehigh Gorge Drive becomes S. Lehigh Gorge Drive. Travel 2.5 miles south on S. Lehigh Gorge Drive and turn left onto Rockport Road. Drive 1.1 miles on Rockport Road to parking spaces along the road. Park and walk down to the Lehigh Gorge Trail.

This is a free event which is open to the public, therefore no time credits will be earned or charged for attendance.
